Hammer Toes is a condition in which the toes are held in a contracted position. Hammer toes can be flexible, but after a period of time may become rigid in that position. When the toes are held in this position for an extended period of time, the tendons and muscles may become permanently shortened.
Generally speaking, hammer toes are caused by abnormal foot function. This can be due to a collapsed arch, ill fitting shoes or change in function following an injury. Very often the toes are held in this position as they are “gripping’ the ground to improve stability during standing and walking. The use of an orthotic and proper shoes to restore arch stability can allow the toes to relax and regain normal position. However, if gripping occurs long enough, so that the toes become rigid in this gripping position, surgical correction is sometimes needed.
The Function Restoration approach is effective in restoring normal toe position if it is addressed soon enough.
